The statistic graphic below shows the leading e-commerce platforms in use in the United States in 2020. E-commerce platforms provide a virtual online store for consumers to buy products and services. The software provides both a virtual storefront as well as a variety of other services necessary for a retailer to run their business, such as inventory and customer relationship management or marketing and promotional tools.
The most popular E-Commerce platform in the US in 2020 was Squarespace (23.89%), closely followed by WooCommerce (22.48%), according to Statista.com. Far behind in third place was MonsterCommerce (10.68%) which was acquired by Network Solutions. Shopify was in fourth place, with 10.67%.
This is a big change from just five years ago in 2015, as you can see from the second illustration below, which shows the statistics for the year 2015. Of the six most popular platforms in 2015 most are no longer even in the 2020 top ten list, including the once popular Virtuemart (Joomla), and Prestashop. Magento – once the #1 most popular – has slipped to only 2.45% and Magento Enterprise which once had 4.5% is no longer in the list (…..possibly due to its humongous fees of USD $24,000 per year…).
The charts also illustrate the importance of user experience (and in particular, how easy a product is to use and manage – eg: Virtuemart and Magento are not exactly easy for beginners) and other factors.
There is also a trend towards hosted e-commerce stores. WooCommerce, despite being largely a self-hosted software installation like Virtuemart, Prestashop & Magento, has probably remained so popular because it is so easy to use, and the large range of free and inexpensive extensions available.
